What I've been bumpinn

There's much debate that there's a set "freshman class" or "upcoming rapper" category in hip hop, and again there's much debate who's at the top of that list. I'm here to tell you that I recognize that Drake, Kid Cudi, and Wale are at the top of that list. I'd say that they're all equally at the top. But wait, there can only be one! I know right? So I'm going to base it off their freshman albums. I think its fair, because in all honesty, a strong debut album will secure your spot in history. Look at Nas' "Illmatic", Jay-Z' "Reasonable Doubt", and Kanye's "The College Dropout". Three very solid albums. Three very solid careers. Nuff Said.
A few posts ago i did a review on Kid Cudi's "Man on the Moon: The End of Days", and I'm back to do Wale's "Attention Deficit."

The first run through of the album made me go "wow." All of Wale's previous mixtapes were VERY good, and I think its fair to call "Attention Deficit" an ALBUM and not just a mixtape. It's that good. Sure, some tracks are very radio friendly, but it's not like Wale can't spit. Because there's no doubt that he can't. My favorites include "Mama Told Me", "World Tour", and "Beautiful Bliss". These however are not the ONLY good tracks on the album. The guest appearances were from a broad spectrum of artists. On one hand you've got Bun B and Marsha Ambrosius (Floetry). And then you've got up and coming artists J. Cole and K'naan. In all, the album is solid; it's a great mix of both radio hits and lyrical bliss.

But hey, you gave that same rating for Kid Cudi's debut album. I'm going to say that Wale has a slight edge over Kid Cudi...just because at this day in age, lyricism isn't enough. Being a good MC isn't enough either. When you crossover into the mainstream, you have to attain a kind of widespread radio presence and public presence. Cudi did this with "Day N Nite", but with his latest album, the public is going to have to get used to his style. Wale crossed over with "Chillin", and soon with "Pretty Girls" and "Let it Loose". That's why I'm giving Wale the slight edge in terms of success in the music industry. As an artist, Wale is slightly better than Kid Cudi. Drake, when are you going to drop something? Your LP was full of old songs.

today i ditched class and slept in all morning. i woke up at 3pm and then called up my black friends and we got together in the parking lot behind vdc. we got in the escalade and listened to lil wayne and got high. then we went to costco and stole all of their TVs. my friend deezy gave me his gun and i pointed it at the guard while they loaded the escalade. then i shot him in the arm and ran away. we went up to compton and i got in a gang fight. i shot deezy. and i stole his dunks. i'm giving them to my lex cause they're 10s.

Two albums that have been on repeat for the past two days...

I'm not gonna front...it would seem that Drake's been taking most of the spotlight on the radio/public and even Wale is getting in on the action with "Chillin." I'm not saying that Cudi's faded, but the world's gotten off the "Day N Nite" hype long ago, so when I say that his debut album is gonna give Drake a run for his money, I mean it. The public just has to get acclimated to his style. Cudi's sound is totally different- he uses a unique flow which reminds me of spoken poetry. Sure he doesn't exactly sound like everyone else (which is good), but if the skeptics frown upon it, the instrumentals are amazing enough to see past it. You know what's a bonus? Ratatat and MGMT are on the album too. Game Over.

Rating:
Cudi's uniqueness is reminiscent of Kanye's music...is it uncanny that he's under Ye's wing? Its all G.O.O.D.-- especially since it hasn't even been released yet (within the first 4 minutes of the leak, it was downloaded 1.7 million times).

From "Heart of the City" to "03'Bonnie and Clyde" Jay-Z's third blueprint album doesn't disappoint. It's easy to say that he needed an album to bounce back after Kingdom Come and American Gangster, and TB3 is THAT album. Kanye was back to producing most of the album which is always a good thing. The only problem I have with TB3 is that it was kind of heavy on the collaborations...for some reason I wish Jay was reminiscent of Reasonable Doubt because he could do it all by himself haha. Nonetheless the album lives up to the trilogy!

Rating:
"Empire State of Mind" is probably my favorite track on the record...Alicia Keys completely nailed it...best believe it's gonna be on repeat!

Sorry for the non-substantial posts (for lack of better words), but here's yet another thing I want to share with yall. If I've been doing a lot of something this summer, its probably watching movies...

Inglorious Basterds

I'm gonna cut to the chase. This was probably the best movie that I've seen this summer, right after "Funny People." I don't care how sick and twisted and graphic it was (well maybe I do) because this was 150% pure entertainment. But not for the squeamish. This was more graphic and gory than the aforementioned "District 9." Wait, so yeah, its a Quentin Tarantino movie, I would have expected that. But WAIT. The dialogue was wonderfully written, with quirky jokes, awkward jokes, and even cynicism. You'll laugh at the things that aren't supposed to be funny. Also, this movie isn't just all about killing Nazis; there are several plots that are interwoven between each other, and somehow they are all connected (Think about "Sin City", and you'll totally understand).

Rating:
I'm a sucker for interwoven plots, and even more so for plots twist. This movie had it all, awkward humor, cynicism, and sophistication. Well done Tarantino!

I’m not a Movie Critic – "District 9"

You know how everyone told you that this movie was really really good? Well, you should listen to them. This movie was crazyyyyyyy. Besides the fact that I watched it sitting in the second row, I'd warn that this movie might make you nauseous. Its captured in this documentary type dimension with the camera following the characters. So what you get is the wild, ecstatic camera motions when the scene gets intense. That's enough to make someone queasy - I'm still nauseous myself. Anyway, the movie itself is spectacular- aside from all the gore and visuals, the plot is clear and easy to follow. The CGI is amazing, the District 9 Prawns look both gross yet intriguing. The only thing about the plot that's hard to adjust to is the fact that the aliens had been on Earth for 20 years already, giving them time to get acclimated with society: at first it seemed that they had just gotten there, and their already human-like behaviors was confusing to the audience (well at least to me...)

I caught myself laughing at parts that weren't supposed to be funny. That's the sign of a GREAT, great movie.

Although she did not take the crown, she did win Miss Photogenic, and I'm very proud of her. Her hard work paid off! And now she finally gets to rest hahaa. Great job, Jane!

Breaker 1/9 - Common

I'm not a Movie Critic - "The Ugly Truth" & "Funny People"

Alright, well i'm not a movie critic, because what do critics do? Criticize? Critique? I'm sorry but these words carry negative connotations, and I'm not about that haha. Then what do I do if i don't critique? I have no idea.

The Ugly Truth

So I saw this one last week, and I must say that before I saw it, I honestly thought it looked kinda interesting. Call me a homo, call me soft, ionno it looked intriguing haha. And that's pretty much what it was. To those who like movies with a solid plot and substance, don't go see this. The acting couldn't have been any better for a movie of this subject, and the plot was very cliche (go figure). However it didn't take away from the funny parts of the movie. I think rottentomatoes.com was kind of harsh on their rating of the movie, though. Cmon, just give it a chance!

Rating:
I go to see movies to be entertained, and with all the sex jokes, hey, it was hard not to be. This one i thought wasn't exactly plain jane, but it also wasn't the cat's pajamas...

Funny People

I saw this one yesterday with high hopes. Let's just say that it met my expectations and went over just a tad bit. Compared to "Knocked Up" and "The 40-year-old Virgin", I'd say that Apatow hit a sense of maturity in this one. Sure, there's plenty fart jokes and penis jokes, but they're all appropriate for the characters: plus, who wants to watch a serious movie with Adam Sandler, Seth Rogan, and Jonah Hill? No one. Did I mention that RZA and Eminem made an appearance? And did I mention that both of them were HELLA hilarious? Anyway, the downfall to this film was that it was a whopping 2 hours and something minutes. I must say that the climax was right in the middle, and just when I was satisfied, hey, there was another hour left! Uh oh. The first hour was all fun and games, but in the second, things got awfully serious, and it is for this that I thought the movie had reached a more mature/profound level. And to be honest I never really anticipated any of this, neither did the audience. Now I know why friend's have given me mixed reviews about this movie.

Rating:
Apatow and Sandler came correct with the jokes and all the funniness, but to the audience it would seem that the deeper parts (second half) of the movie came as a surprise. Nonetheless it was dope, and I thoroughly enjoyed all 2 hours and something minutes of it.

Went to see "The Ugly Truth" with Steph...it was really funny. The storyline was cliche, but all the sexually explicit jokes made up for it haha. Rottentomatoes.com gave it a 15% but for all I care they can suck it and grow a pair because if it didn't entertain them one bit, they really need to get a life and lighten up. hahahah

Caught this show "Fuerza Bruta" at 7. The fam and I decided not to watch a Broadway show because all the good ones were all sold out :(.
The dude at the ticket place said this was like a fusion of The Blue Man Group, Cirque Soleil and a bunch of other stuff. Having seen both, I was hella disappointed...sure it was "amazing", but sheesh even my mom said that it was some "weird ass shit". hahaha.
Basically you stood for the 70 minute show and had to move around because the audience section was also the stage and vice versa. In the end it became just a big dance party...I hella enjoy watching old people dance !!

Okay. So I had Flexdine dollars left so I decided to throw a Wendy's Chicken Nugget party. What is a chicken party? Well basically, I rolled up to the Wendy's on campus and ordered 16 orders of their 5-piece nuggets. It cost roughly $20...I had $3 left so I gave it to Garebear. I ended up eating 25 nuggets.
The Result?? Let's just say I'm never eating 25 nuggets ever again. All I got from it was food coma and a belly. Uh OH. But i'll def throw another party like this :).

Like I've been saying from time and time again, the state of hip hop is corrupt under the umbrella of big business and the music industry itself. Hell, I'm writing a 10 page paper on this for one of my classes. I came across this VERY good interview of Questlove from The Roots, and he explains how a song on the radio gets into your head. Basically, those songs you really liked that you heard on the radio would never had been there if there wasn't this crude business technique employed by record labels. So today i went to hit up Disneyland after a loooooooong week. Thank gosh I did too. Copped that Socal 2fer ticket for $69 (UCI ID worked!). Probably gonna hit up California Adventure sometime this week. YEE!! Good thing i went today cuz it was HELLA FUN. I recommend it as a de-stress. My feet hurt at the end though. ugh.

There were hella families and little kids up in Disneyland and they made it hella crowded. I couldn't help but notice that there were HELLA angry parents and stuff. They be like yelling and stuff at they kids...Isn't Disneyland the "happiest place on earth?". Guess not, cuz I walked past some bopper that said "I fuckin hate this place." I was like dayummm son pump ya brakes. Go ride Dumbo or something and fix that attitude!!! :)

Remember watching the "Special Features" on the DVD of your favorite movie? And remember watching the film actually being filmed? That's how I felt. I was like that dude who records the movie being recorded haha.
In his attempt to further his skill and achieve worldwide fame, Daniel needed to start somewhere. Soliciting people for "photoshoots" is his approach, and so far I guess it's been working for him. I had the case of the mondays. from a disappointing huf "surprise" pack, to internet connectivity problems all morning, and having to go to class...this was def a monday haha. There were upsides, and I bet you can figure them out after looking through the following...

HUF SURPRISE PACKS ARE OVERRATED!! (but that's not gonna stop me from trying again...perhaps)
so this is how it works:
you send in however much money you want, and the dudes at Huf determine what they wanna give you. Basically you'd expect stuff that's worth more than what you sent them; this is usually the case.
I sent in $40 and this is what I got:

Yeah, the value of this well over $40, and even well over $100... but thing is I wouldn't rock any of it!! so yeah i was more like...
